Northeastern Nevada Museum is located in the City of Elko and is considered the “best museum in the State of Nevada” by late governor Kenny Guinn. This 40,000-square-foot facility completely balances culture, entertainment, and education. This museum’s collection preserves a history gallery. It protects this area’s rich past while extensive historical archives such as photos, maps, records, manuscripts, 1870s newspapers, a research library, and economic and early settlers’ artifacts.

This museum opened its doors in 1968 in a 6000-square-foot building and later expanded in 1982. The Northeastern Nevada Museum has over art galleries, over two hundred mounted worldwide animals, a museum store, offices, workshops, exhibition galleries, a round theater, and a research library. The NNM won national awards for its continuous efforts in professionally preserving local history from the American Association for State and Local History and the American Association of Museums.

Included in the Northeastern Nevada Museum’s other permanent exhibits are the following: 

• A Basque exhibit
• A western saddle exhibit; a 1900s kitchen
• An extensive collection of Shoshone brackets and Paiute beadwork
• A school room and commercial printing press room
• A ranching, mining, and railroad display exhibits and more

The NNM’s Wanamaker Wildlife Wing features over 300 animal mounts from around the world, most of which are exhibited in a natural setting. Ancient mastodon bones are also on display. The museum’s rotating art galleries feature local, regional, and national artists’ shows. The Northeastern Nevada Museum has multiple valuable permanent art collections like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston (legendary photographers) photos.
