Here’s some great books set in Utah to read that will get you excited about your upcoming trp to Vernal!

Desert Solitare – Edward Abbey

Abbey wrote this nonfiction book about his experience working in Arches National Park and the extensive beauty of nature he witnessed there.  While Arches is a few hours south of Vernal, this book will still get you excited to hike through the local national parks, where you will see rushing rivers carving through canyons as they have for centuries, wildlife completing their day-to-day routines, and the beautiful flora that can be found in the Uintah Basin.

Between A Rock And A Hard Place – Aron Ralston

This true story tells of Ralston’s 6 day survival in Bluejohn Canyon and the trials he overcame in order to make it back to civilization.  It’s inspiring while still reminding you to be careful – nature is a fickle mistress.

The Last Cowgirl – Jana Richman

This fiction novel tells the story of a girl raised on a rural Utah ranch who yearns for symbols of civilization – suburbs and modern comfort.  If you are accustomed to city life, this book can reveal a lot about living on a Western ranch, making it quite enlightening, and the storyline will make you laugh and cry.

My Story – Elizabeth Smart

You likely followed the case of Elizabeth Smart, from when she went missing to when she was found.  Hear her tale in her own words – the fear and hopelessness she felt while she was kept in Salt Lake City, and how she kept her sanity until she was once again free.  It’s heartbreaking, but also an excellent example of humanity’s resiliance.

You may not think of Utah as a popular backdrop in novels, but these books will change your mind!
